Building AR Aids for Achromatopsia and Color Blindness

A research prototype helping people with complete color blindness navigate the world with confidence and independence

The Challenge

A lot of people live with achromatopsia — a rare form of complete color blindness where the world appears only in grayscale, often with light sensitivity and reduced sharpness. Everyday tasks like matching clothes, reading maps, identifying fruits, or understanding traffic lights become challenging and sometimes unsafe.

AchromaAssist is a research prototype developing an augmented reality (AR) aid application for modern AR glasses. It leverages AR and AI technologies to assist individuals with severe color vision deficiencies — particularly achromatopsia and other forms of color blindness — in everyday tasks.

Key use cases include:
- Augmented color identification
- Contextual object labeling
- Contrast enhancement

The roadmap

December 2025 - Initial research, concept validation, early hardware compatibility checks.

January 2026 - Development kickoff, building a prototype for XREAL AR glasses and Viture Luma Ultra device. Check current prototypes.

March 2026 - First internal/closed alpha build ready. Early testers (people with achromatopsia or severe color blindness) will get access for real-world feedback.
